2015

We first built Joe as a butler you could text. You told it what you needed; it got it done. The idea was right and the economics were wrong: every request needed a person behind the screen, the automation cost more than it saved, and finding customers who would trust a stranger with their errands was hard.

2016 → 2025

We took what we had learned and spent the next decade building automation for businesses — the systems that answer for companies in sales and support chat. It taught us what the models could and could not be trusted with, and what people will and will not hand over.

2026

The model can now do what the people behind the screen used to do: read a forwarded bill, hear a voice note, read a calendar back, and file the commitment with the sentence it came from. So we are building Joe again.

What Joe is

JoeHukum is a personal CRM and executive assistant app. It builds a private ledger of the people, promises, bills and dates you tell it about, forward to it, or — if you connect them — that it reads from your Google Calendar and Gmail; reminds you who needs attention, prepares meeting context, tracks bills and commitments, and drafts messages for you to review and send.

What Joe asks Google for

JoeHukum requests identity, and at most two optional read-only scopes:

Identity (openid, email, profile) — to create and sign in to the user's account.

Google Calendar, read-only and optional (calendar.events.readonly) — to understand upcoming meetings so JoeHukum can log meeting history and prepare the user for their own meetings.

Gmail, read-only and optional (gmail.readonly) — requested only when the user connects Gmail, to read the bills, promises and dates in the mail the user points at.

Gmail is opened only where it matters.

JoeHukum requests gmail.readonly only when the user connects Gmail. It then looks at arriving mail by its headers — sender, subject, Gmail's own category and a one-line snippet — and drops promotions, social mail, newsletters, codes and alerts without fetching them. Only a message that looks like a bill, renewal, promise, date or a person writing to the user is fetched, and read once for exactly that; JoeHukum keeps that extract with the sender, subject, date and message id, never the body or any attachment. The user can include their sent mail, name senders to always read or a label to follow, and strike any sender off for good. Disconnecting deletes those extracts and reports how many were removed. Without a connected account, the only email JoeHukum sees is what the user chooses to forward to their own JoeHukum address, which is read once, extracted, and deleted. JoeHukum does not send email, modify calendars, delete data, or make any change in the user's Google account.

Data and privacy

JoeHukum stores relationship and obligation extracts, not raw email bodies. Google access tokens are encrypted at rest. JoeHukum does not sell user data or use it for advertising.
